It’s a question we hear in the pharmacy all the time:

“Can I take my vitamins and supplements at the same time as my medications?”

The answer is: it depends!

Vitamins and supplements may be available without a prescription, but that doesn’t mean they can’t interact with medications. Some supplements can affect how well a medication is absorbed, while others may increase or decrease its effects.

The good news is that an interaction doesn’t always mean you have to stop taking the supplement. Sometimes the solution is as simple as taking your medication and supplement at different times of the day.

Why Does Timing Matter?

Certain vitamins and minerals can interfere with the way your body absorbs some medications.

For example, calcium and iron can reduce the absorption of levothyroxine, a commonly prescribed thyroid medication. If you take both, your pharmacist can help you determine how far apart they should be taken.

Minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc can also interact with certain antibiotics, including some tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Taking them too close together may prevent your body from absorbing as much of the antibiotic as intended.

This is a great example of why an interaction doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t use both products.

Sometimes it’s not what you’re taking, it’s when you’re taking it.

What About Blood Thinners?

If you take a blood thinner, it’s especially important to talk with your pharmacist before starting a new vitamin, herbal product, or supplement.

Some supplements can affect bleeding risk or interfere with how certain blood thinners work. The exact concern depends on the medication and supplement you’re taking, so don’t assume that something is safe just because it’s available without a prescription.

Instead, let us check the specific combination for you.

But It’s Natural, Can It Really Interact?

Absolutely.

The word “natural” doesn’t mean interaction-free.

Vitamins, minerals, herbs, and other supplements contain ingredients that can have effects in the body. Those effects may sometimes overlap or interfere with prescription and over-the-counter medications.

That’s why we recommend treating supplements as part of your complete medication list, not as something separate.

Your Pharmacist Can Help

Instead of guessing, stopping a supplement on your own, or trying to create a complicated schedule yourself, ask us.

At Foster Corner Drug, we can review your medications and supplements and help determine:

Which products can be taken together

Whether certain products should be separated by a few hours

The best time of day to take them

Whether a supplement could interact with one of your medications

Whether a particular dose is appropriate for you

Whether you’re getting the same vitamin or mineral from multiple products without realizing it

That last point can be especially easy to overlook. For example, you might be taking a multivitamin along with several individual or combination supplements that contain some of the same ingredients.

Bring Us Your Bottles

Not sure exactly what you’re taking? That’s okay.

Bring your vitamin and supplement bottles to the pharmacy. You can also take clear photos of the front labels and Supplement Facts panels and show them to us.

Knowing the exact product, ingredients, and amounts makes it much easier for us to review your supplements alongside your medications.

Your pharmacist isn’t just here to answer questions about prescriptions. We’re also here to help you make sense of everything in your medicine cabinet.

Before adding a new vitamin, mineral, herbal product, or supplement, stop by Foster Corner Drug and talk with our pharmacy team. A quick conversation can help you use your medications and supplements more safely and effectively.

Sometimes the question isn’t just, “Can I take these together?” It’s, “What’s the best way to take them?”

Magnesium is one of those nutrients that plays a role in more areas of your health than you might realize. It is involved in hundreds of processes throughout the body, supporting everything from normal muscle and nerve function to energy production and bone health.

Many people don’t consistently consume the recommended amount of magnesium through their diet, which is one reason magnesium supplements get so much attention.

At Foster Corner Drug, magnesium is one of the supplements we frequently discuss with patients. And when someone is looking for a comprehensive magnesium supplement, Replenish Nutrition RepleniMag Neuro is one of the products we like to recommend.

What Does Magnesium Do?

Magnesium is an essential mineral your body needs to function normally. It contributes to healthy muscle and nerve function, energy production, bone development, and many other important processes.

At the pharmacy, some of the most common reasons people ask us about magnesium include:

Muscle function and recovery

Relaxation and stress support

Sleep support

Nervous system health

General wellness

It’s important to remember that magnesium isn’t a treatment for every muscle cramp, stressful day, or bad night’s sleep. However, getting adequate magnesium is an important part of supporting normal body function.

Can You Get Magnesium from Food?

Absolutely, and food should be an important source of magnesium.

Magnesium can be found naturally in foods such as nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains, and leafy green vegetables. Eating a varied, balanced diet can go a long way toward meeting your nutritional needs.

However, diet isn’t always perfect, and some people may be interested in supplementing their magnesium intake. That’s where choosing the right product becomes important.

Not All Magnesium Supplements Are the Same

Walk down the supplement aisle and you’ll quickly discover that there isn’t just one kind of magnesium.

You’ll see magnesium citrate, glycinate, oxide, malate, L-threonate, and other forms. Different forms can vary in their formulation, absorption, tolerability, and intended use.

Some forms of magnesium are also more likely to have a laxative effect than others.

That’s why we don’t think choosing a magnesium supplement should necessarily come down to grabbing the first bottle that says “magnesium” on the front.

The better question is: Why are you taking it?

Why We Like RepleniMag Neuro

One of the magnesium supplements we recommend at Foster Corner Drug is Replenish Nutrition RepleniMag Neuro.

What makes this product interesting is that it doesn’t rely on just one form of magnesium. RepleniMag Neuro combines magnesium L-threonate (Magtein®), Albion® di-magnesium malate, and TRAACS® magnesium lysinate glycinate chelate.

The formulation is designed with brain and nervous system support in mind. Replenish Nutrition specifically positions RepleniMag Neuro to support healthy brain magnesium levels, cognitive health, stress management, sleep quality, healthy mood, and overall magnesium intake.

That’s one reason we like having it as an option when patients come to us looking for more than a basic magnesium supplement.

But that doesn’t mean everyone needs RepleniMag Neuro. The right magnesium product, and whether you need a magnesium supplement at all, depends on your diet, health needs, medications, and reason for taking it.

Check With Us Before Adding Magnesium

Just because something is available without a prescription doesn’t mean it’s appropriate for everyone.

Magnesium can affect the absorption of certain medications, so timing may matter. People taking prescription medications should discuss potential interactions with a healthcare professional, which is also specifically recommended in RepleniMag Neuro’s product directions.

That’s where your pharmacist can help.

Before adding magnesium, or any new supplement, to your daily routine, let us know what medications and other supplements you’re already taking. We can help look for potential interactions and discuss whether the product makes sense for you.

Is Magnesium Right for You?

There’s a reason magnesium is one of the supplements we frequently discuss at Foster Corner Drug. It plays several important roles throughout the body, but there are also many different forms and formulations to choose from.

If you’re interested in magnesium for sleep, relaxation, muscle function, nervous system support, or general wellness, stop by and talk with us.

We’d be happy to show you Replenish Nutrition RepleniMag Neuro, review your current medications and supplements, and help you decide whether it’s a good fit for your individual needs.

Sometimes choosing a supplement isn’t just about what you take, it’s about choosing the right form for the right reason.

New backpacks? Check.
School supplies? Check.
First-day outfit? Check.

But there’s one back-to-school task that’s easy to forget: checking your family’s medicine cabinet.

Once school starts, schedules get busier, kids spend more time together, and those unexpected runny noses, seasonal allergies, playground scrapes, and late-night fevers have a way of showing up at the least convenient time.

Before the first school bell rings, take a few minutes to give your family’s medications and health supplies a back-to-school refresh.

Check What You Already Have

Start by looking through the medications and health supplies you already keep at home. Check expiration dates and look for products that are empty or running low.

Depending on your family’s needs, you may want to make sure you have appropriate supplies for common situations, such as:

A working thermometer

Bandages and basic first-aid supplies

Age-appropriate products for fever or discomfort

Seasonal allergy products

Supplies for minor cuts, scrapes, or bug bites

Any medications your family regularly uses

You don’t need to stock your medicine cabinet with everything on the pharmacy shelf. The goal is simply to make sure the products your family relies on are available when you need them.

Check Prescriptions and School Medications

If your child takes a prescription medication regularly, now is a good time to check the remaining supply and available refills.

Pay special attention to medications or supplies your child may need during the school day, such as an inhaler, epinephrine auto-injector, diabetes supplies, or another prescribed medication.

School medication policies can vary. Check with your child’s school or school nurse before the first day to find out whether you need updated authorization forms, appropriately labeled medication, or additional supplies.

Taking care of those details ahead of time can save you from scrambling once school begins.

Check Expiration Dates and Dispose of Old Medications Properly

Found expired or unused medications while cleaning things out?

Don’t assume every medication should simply be flushed down the toilet or tossed into the household trash. Disposal recommendations can vary by medication.

Ask our team at Foster Corner Drug about appropriate medication disposal options in your area. We can help point you in the right direction.

Check Where Your Medications Are Stored

Despite the name, the bathroom “medicine cabinet” isn’t always the best place for medications.

Bathrooms can become warm and humid, and some medications should be protected from those conditions. Unless the product’s instructions say otherwise, medications are generally best kept in an appropriate cool, dry location.

Most importantly, keep medications and supplements securely stored out of the reach and sight of children.

Get Ahead of Back-to-School Germs

A healthy school year isn’t only about what’s in your medicine cabinet.

Back-to-school season is also a good time to reinforce everyday healthy habits. Encourage regular handwashing, adequate sleep, good nutrition, and staying hydrated throughout the day.

It’s also a good opportunity to check whether your family is up to date on recommended immunizations and discuss any questions with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Remember: Kids Aren’t Small Adults

This is especially important when choosing over-the-counter medications.

A product that’s appropriate for an adult may not be appropriate for a child. Always check the label for age restrictions and dosing instructions, and use weight-based dosing when directed.

For liquid medications, use the measuring device provided with the product rather than a household spoon. If you’re unsure how much medication to give your child, ask your pharmacist before giving it.

Put Foster Corner Drug on Your Back-to-School Checklist

Not sure which over-the-counter product is appropriate for your child’s age? Have questions about a prescription they need during school? Wondering whether something in your medicine cabinet is expired or should be replaced?

Bring your questions to Foster Corner Drug.

Our pharmacy team can help you review medications, choose appropriate over-the-counter products, answer dosing questions, and make sure your family is prepared for the school year ahead.

Back-to-school preparation isn’t just about backpacks and pencils. A little health preparation now can make those unexpected sick days, scrapes, and sniffles much easier to handle later.

Most people don’t think much about how their prescription is actually made. Your doctor sends a prescription to the pharmacy, the pharmacist fills it from a manufacturer’s bottle, and you take it home.

But what happens when the standard, commercially manufactured medication isn’t the right fit for a patient’s individual needs?

That’s where prescription compounding can sometimes help.

At Foster Corner Drug, compounding gives us another way to work with patients and their healthcare providers when an available manufactured medication doesn’t appropriately meet a patient’s needs.

What Is Prescription Compounding?

Compounding is the practice of preparing a customized medication for an individual patient based on a prescription from an authorized healthcare provider.

Instead of simply dispensing a medication exactly as a manufacturer produced it, a compounding pharmacy may combine, mix, or alter ingredients to create a prescribed strength or dosage form that isn’t commercially available or otherwise meet a specific patient need.

Most traditional compounding pharmacies operate under what’s known as Section 503A, preparing compounded medications based on patient-specific prescriptions. A separate category, known as 503B outsourcing facilities, operates under a different federal framework and is subject to additional FDA requirements.

For most patients, though, the important question isn’t which regulatory category a pharmacy falls into. It’s why someone might need a compounded medication in the first place.

Why Would Someone Need a Compounded Medication?

There are several situations where compounding may be appropriate.

A specific strength isn’t commercially available.
Medications are manufactured in predetermined strengths, but those strengths don’t meet every patient’s needs. A prescriber may determine that a patient needs a different strength that isn’t available as a manufactured product.

A different dosage form is needed.
Not everyone can easily swallow a tablet or capsule. Depending on the medication and patient’s needs, a compounding pharmacy may be able to prepare a medication as a liquid, cream, ointment, or another appropriate dosage form.

A patient has an allergy or sensitivity to an inactive ingredient.
Commercial medications can contain dyes, preservatives, fillers, flavorings, or other inactive ingredients. When appropriate, compounding may allow a medication to be prepared without a particular ingredient that creates a problem for an individual patient.

A patient needs a specific combination.
In some circumstances, a prescriber may determine that a compounded preparation containing more than one ingredient is appropriate for a patient’s individual treatment plan.

Compounding isn’t about making a medication “better” than the manufactured version. It’s about providing another option when an available manufactured product doesn’t appropriately meet an individual patient’s needs.

Compounding Can Be Especially Helpful for Children

Pediatric medications are a great example of why compounding exists.

Children may need doses based on their age, weight, and medical needs, but a medication may only be manufactured as a tablet or in strengths intended for adults.

When appropriate, a prescriber may order a compounded medication in a specific concentration that allows a parent or caregiver to accurately measure the child’s prescribed dose.

A liquid dosage form can also be much easier for a child who can’t swallow a tablet.

And Compounding Isn’t Just for People

Our four-legged family members can have unique medication needs, too.

Veterinarians sometimes prescribe medications that aren’t commercially available in an appropriate strength or dosage form for a particular animal. Depending on the medication and circumstances, veterinary compounding can provide another option.

Just like human medications, compounded medications for pets require an appropriate prescription and must meet applicable compounding requirements.

What About Drug Shortages?

Drug shortages are another reason you may hear about compounding.

Shortages can happen for many reasons, including manufacturing problems, supply-chain disruptions, increased demand, shortages of ingredients, or discontinued products.

“Eat your fruits and vegetables” might be one of the most repeated pieces of health advice out there. We’ve heard it since we were kids, so it can be easy to tune it out.

But there’s a good reason fruits and vegetables continue to be an important part of healthy eating. They provide fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that support your body in many different ways. Better yet, adding more produce to your diet doesn’t require an expensive meal plan or a complete overhaul of the way you eat.

Sometimes, better nutrition starts with simply making a little more room on your plate.

Why Aim for Five?

You’ve probably heard the phrase “five a day,” referring to five servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

Research consistently links diets rich in fruits and vegetables with better health outcomes, including cardiovascular health and overall longevity. Five servings a day provides a simple, practical target that can encourage people to make produce a bigger part of their overall diet.

But don’t get too caught up in counting every serving.

Another simple approach is to make fruits and vegetables a regular part of your meals and snacks. When possible, try to make about half your plate fruits and vegetables.

If you’re nowhere near that today, that’s okay. Adding even one more serving than you’re currently eating is a step in the right direction.

What Are Fruits and Vegetables Doing for Your Body?

Fruits and vegetables aren’t just “healthy” in some vague sense. They provide nutrients your body needs every day.

Fiber supports healthy digestion, helps you feel satisfied after eating, and can help support healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Potassium, found in foods such as potatoes, bananas, leafy greens, and tomatoes, plays an important role in normal muscle and nerve function and can help support healthy blood pressure.

Folate, found in foods including leafy greens, beans, oranges, and avocados, is important for normal cell growth and is especially important before and during pregnancy.

Vitamin C and other plant compounds contribute to normal cellular function and are part of what makes eating a variety of fruits and vegetables beneficial.

The important word here is variety. Different fruits and vegetables provide different nutrients, so eating several colors and types can help you get a broader range of nutrition.

Give Produce More Room on Your Plate

You don’t have to rebuild every meal around vegetables.

Instead, look at what you’re already eating and ask yourself:

“Where could I add one more fruit or vegetable?”

Add berries or a banana to breakfast. Have an apple with lunch. Toss some extra vegetables into an omelet, soup, pasta sauce, or casserole. Add another vegetable to the dinner table.

Small additions throughout the day can add up quickly.

Make Healthy Choices Convenient

Healthy eating becomes much easier when nutritious foods are ready when you’re hungry.

Keep fruit somewhere visible. Wash and cut vegetables ahead of time. Keep frozen vegetables available for nights when you don’t have time to prepare fresh produce.

And don’t overlook frozen or canned fruits and vegetables. They can be nutritious, convenient, and affordable choices.

When choosing canned products, look for fruits without added sugars when possible and vegetables labeled lower sodium or no salt added.

Healthy Doesn’t Have to Mean Expensive

Eating more produce doesn’t mean filling your cart with expensive specialty foods.

Try buying fruits and vegetables that are in season, choosing store-brand frozen produce, and using canned options when they’re more affordable.

Planning meals around what you already have can also reduce food waste. Have bananas getting a little too ripe? Freeze them for smoothies. Extra vegetables from dinner? Add them to tomorrow’s eggs, soup, or lunch.

The goal isn’t to buy the most expensive produce. It’s to find options that realistically fit your budget and routine.

Aim for Color, Not Perfection

A colorful plate is an easy way to encourage variety without turning every meal into a nutrition calculation.

Greens, berries, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, sweet potatoes, oranges, and other colorful foods each bring something different to the table.

But remember: healthy eating doesn’t have to be perfect.

You aren’t failing because you didn’t eat five servings yesterday, and one meal isn’t going to make or break your health.

What matters much more is the pattern you build over time.

Start With One Extra Serving

You don’t need special equipment, a complicated diet, or a pantry filled with expensive foods to start eating better.

Start small.

Add berries to your breakfast. Grab a piece of fruit for an afternoon snack. Put an extra vegetable on your dinner plate. Keep frozen vegetables available for busy nights.

Start with one extra serving today.

Once that becomes normal, look for another opportunity.

At Foster Corner Drug, we believe better health often starts with small, realistic choices. If you have questions about nutrition, vitamins, supplements, or how your diet may interact with your medications, talk with our pharmacy team. We’re always happy to help you make informed choices for your health.

When picking up a prescription, one of the most common questions we hear is, “Is the generic really as good as the brand name?” It’s a great question, and one that comes with a common misconception.

Myth: Generic medications don’t work as well as brand-name medications.

Fact: Generic medications contain the same active ingredient, are just as safe and effective, and must meet the same rigorous U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards for quality, safety, and effectiveness as their brand-name counterparts.

Before approval, the FDA requires generic medications to demonstrate bioequivalence, meaning they deliver the same amount of medication into the bloodstream at the same rate as the brand-name medication. This means patients can expect the same therapeutic effect when taking the medication exactly as prescribed.

While generic medications may look different in color, shape, or size, these differences are usually due to inactive ingredients, dyes, coatings, or the manufacturer; not because the medication works differently. The active ingredient, strength, dosage form, and intended use remain the same. Although inactive ingredients may vary slightly, these differences rarely affect how the medication works for most people.

One of the biggest advantages of generic medications is cost savings. Because generic manufacturers don’t have the same research and development expenses as the original manufacturer, they can offer medications at a significantly lower price. Generic medications have helped make treatment more affordable for millions of patients while maintaining the same high standards for quality and effectiveness.

There are certain situations where your healthcare provider may recommend a specific brand-name medication or manufacturer, such as with a small number of medications used to treat conditions like seizures or thyroid disorders. However, for the vast majority of prescriptions, generic medications provide the same benefits at a lower cost.

Why do generic medications look different?

Different manufacturers may use different colors, shapes, coatings, or inactive ingredients, so a generic medication may not look exactly like the brand-name version, or even another generic version. These cosmetic differences do not affect the medication’s safety, quality, or effectiveness.

At Foster Corner Drug, we’re always happy to answer your questions about generic medications, insurance coverage, and prescription costs. Whether you’re starting a new medication or wondering if a generic option is available, our pharmacists are here to help you make informed decisions about your healthcare.

The bottom line: Choosing a generic medication isn’t settling for less, it’s receiving the same trusted treatment at a more affordable price.

Most people know that sunlight helps your body produce vitamin D, but many don’t realize that getting outside shortly after waking up can also help regulate your body’s internal clock. This simple habit can have benefits that go far beyond better sleep.

Your body runs on a natural 24-hour cycle known as your circadian rhythm, which helps control when you feel awake, sleepy, hungry, and even how your hormones are released throughout the day. One of the strongest signals that keeps this internal clock running smoothly is natural morning sunlight.

Spending just 10 to 20 minutes outdoors within the first hour of waking tells your brain it’s time to be alert. Because morning sunlight is much brighter than typical indoor lighting, it can help improve daytime energy, support better focus, boost your mood, and make it easier to fall asleep at night.

The best part? You don’t need to exercise or stare directly at the sun. Simply enjoying your morning coffee on the porch, walking the dog, watering the garden, or taking a short walk outside can provide enough natural light to make a difference.

Even on cloudy days, outdoor light is typically much brighter than indoor lighting and can still help support a healthy circadian rhythm. Pairing morning sunlight with limiting screen time before bed can further strengthen your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle and promote better sleep.

While this simple habit won’t replace a healthy diet, regular exercise, or good sleep hygiene, it’s an easy change that many people overlook. Sometimes the smallest routines can have a surprisingly positive impact on your overall health.

This week, challenge yourself to spend just 10 minutes outside each morning. If you have questions about improving your sleep or boosting your energy naturally, stop by Foster Corner Drug or give us a call. Our pharmacists are always happy to help you build healthier habits and find solutions that fit your needs.

Joint discomfort is one of the most common concerns we hear about at the pharmacy. Whether it’s stiff knees, aching hips, sore shoulders, tendonitis, arthritis, or the everyday wear and tear that comes with staying active, many people are looking for ways to support healthy joints and stay active without relying on pain relievers every day.

One supplement we frequently recommend is Collagen Pro.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and is a major building block of your joints, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, bones, and connective tissue. It provides strength and structure to the tissues that help your body move comfortably. As we age, our natural collagen production begins to decline, which can contribute to joint stiffness, reduced flexibility, and slower recovery from everyday activity.

That’s where Collagen Pro can help. Formulated with high-quality collagen peptides, it helps support the body’s natural ability to maintain healthy connective tissue, cartilage, and joint comfort over time. While it isn’t an overnight fix, many people report noticing improvements in mobility and everyday aches after taking it consistently for several weeks.

We often recommend Collagen Pro to individuals who:

Experience joint pain or stiffness

Have tendonitis or repetitive-use injuries

Live with osteoarthritis or general wear and tear

Stay active through work, exercise, or sports

Frequently rely on over-the-counter pain relievers for everyday discomfort

While medications such as ibuprofen or naproxen can be helpful for occasional pain, relying on them day after day isn’t always the best long-term solution. Supporting your joints from the inside out may help promote healthy cartilage and connective tissue while reducing everyday discomfort. Pairing collagen supplementation with regular physical activity, stretching, and other healthy lifestyle habits may provide even greater support for long-term joint health.

An added benefit? Collagen doesn’t just support your joints. It also promotes healthy skin, hair, nails, bones, and connective tissue, making it one of the most versatile supplements we carry.

Every person’s health needs are different, which is why we always encourage you to speak with one of our pharmacists before starting a new supplement. We’ll help determine whether Collagen Pro is a good fit for your health goals and discuss how it may complement your overall wellness plan.

How long does collagen take to work?

Collagen supports your body’s natural connective tissues, so improvements typically happen gradually rather than overnight. Consistency is key, and many people choose to take collagen daily as part of their long-term wellness routine.

If joint discomfort is keeping you from doing the things you love, stop by Foster Corner Drug and ask us about Collagen Pro. Our pharmacists are happy to answer your questions and help you decide if it’s the right choice for your joint health goals.

Summer is the perfect time to enjoy family barbecues, fishing trips, vacations, gardening, and days at the lake. However, rising temperatures can also increase your risk of heat-related illnesses if you’re not careful. Taking a few simple precautions can help you stay safe, healthy, and enjoy everything summer has to offer.

One of the most important things you can do is stay hydrated. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink water. Thirst is often a sign that you’re already becoming dehydrated. If you’re spending time outdoors or exercising, drink fluids regularly throughout the day and consider beverages with electrolytes if you’re sweating heavily. Eating water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and strawberries can also help support hydration. Alcohol and caffeinated beverages can contribute to dehydration, so be sure to balance them with plenty of water, especially on hot days.

It’s also important to dress for the weather. Lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing helps your body stay cooler by allowing heat to escape more easily. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses provides additional protection from the sun, while sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher helps reduce the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating.

If possible, plan outdoor activities during the cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or later in the evening. On especially hot days, check the heat index or UV forecast before spending extended time outdoors. Taking breaks in the shade or an air-conditioned building can help prevent heat exhaustion. Be sure to keep an eye on children, older adults, and pets, as they are especially vulnerable to high temperatures.

It’s also important to recognize the warning signs of heat-related illness. Heavy sweating, dizziness, muscle cramps, headache, nausea, weakness, and fatigue are common signs of heat exhaustion. If someone develops confusion, loses consciousness, has hot, dry skin, or has a very high body temperature, seek emergency medical attention immediately, as these may be signs of heat stroke.

Many people don’t realize that certain medications can increase sensitivity to the sun or make it harder for your body to regulate heat. Some antibiotics, blood pressure medications, diuretics, antihistamines, and other prescription medications may increase your risk of dehydration or sunburn. If you’re unsure whether one of your medications has these effects, your pharmacist can help you understand what precautions to take and recommend ways to stay safe while taking your medication.

If you’re traveling this summer, don’t forget to refill your prescriptions before you leave. Having enough medication for your trip helps prevent interruptions in your treatment and gives you one less thing to worry about while you’re away.

At Foster Corner Drug, we’re here to help you stay healthy all summer long. Whether you have questions about your medications, hydration, sun safety, preventing heat-related illness, or preparing for summer travel, our pharmacists are always happy to help. Stop by the pharmacy or give us a call, we’re here to help you enjoy a safe and healthy summer!

Taking your medications exactly as prescribed is one of the most important things you can do to protect your health and help your treatment work as intended. Whether you’re treating a short-term illness or managing a chronic condition, following your prescribed treatment plan gives your medication the best opportunity to be effective. Skipping doses, stopping a medication too soon, or taking it differently than directed can reduce its effectiveness and, in some cases, lead to serious health complications. Your pharmacist is also one of your best resources for answering questions and helping you stay on track with your medications.

One of the most common examples is antibiotic therapy. Many people begin to feel better after just a few days of taking an antibiotic, but that doesn’t mean the infection is completely gone. Antibiotics also do not treat viral illnesses like the common cold or the flu, so they should only be used when prescribed for bacterial infections. Stopping your antibiotic early can allow the remaining bacteria to survive and multiply, causing the infection to return. It can also contribute to antibiotic resistance, making future bacterial infections more difficult to treat. That’s why it’s important to finish your entire course of antibiotics, even if your symptoms have improved, unless your healthcare provider tells you otherwise.

Medication adherence is just as important for people taking medications for ongoing conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, asthma, thyroid disorders, or depression. These medications often work quietly behind the scenes to control disease and prevent complications. Even if you feel well, stopping your medication without guidance can cause your condition to worsen or increase your risk of serious health problems.

If you’re thinking about stopping a medication because you’re experiencing side effects, concerned about the cost, or simply aren’t sure if you still need it, don’t make that decision on your own. Your pharmacist and healthcare provider can help address your concerns, discuss alternative treatment options, or determine whether changes to your therapy are appropriate.

If remembering to take your medications is a challenge, simple strategies can make a big difference. Setting daily reminders, using a pill organizer, or pairing your medication with another daily habit can help you stay on track. Foster Corner Drug also offers a Medication Synchronization program, a convenient service that coordinates your maintenance prescriptions so they’re ready for pickup at the same time each month. Fewer pharmacy trips and a simpler refill schedule can make medication adherence much easier.

Medication adherence isn’t just about taking a pill; it’s about giving your treatment the best opportunity to improve your health. By taking your medications as prescribed and communicating with your healthcare team before making any changes, you’re investing in better health today and helping prevent complications tomorrow.
