If you’ve heard about Medicare’s new GLP-1 Bridge Program, you’re not alone. Since the program launched on July 1, 2026, many patients have been asking whether they qualify and how they can take advantage of this new opportunity.
The program helps certain Medicare beneficiaries access popular GLP-1 weight loss medications for just $50 per month.
Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program?
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program is a new Medicare initiative designed to make certain GLP-1 medications more affordable for eligible patients who are seeking treatment for obesity and weight management.
If you qualify, your cost is $50 for a one-month supply, regardless of your income.
This program is separate from your normal Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage.
Which GLP-1 Medications Are Covered?
Currently, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program includes:
- Foundayo® (tablet)
- Wegovy® (injection or tablet)
- Zepbound® KwikPen®
Please note: Only the Zepbound KwikPen is covered. The single-dose Zepbound pens and Zepbound vials are not included in this program.
Who Qualifies?
To be eligible, you must meet all of the following requirements.
1. You have Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage.
This includes either:
- A standalone Medicare Part D plan
- A Medicare Advantage plan that includes prescription drug coverage
Certain Medicare plan types are not eligible.
2. Your Medicare plan is not already covering your GLP-1 medication.
The Bridge Program is intended for patients whose Medicare drug plan does not provide coverage for eligible GLP-1 medications.
If your Medicare plan already covers a GLP-1 medication, you’ll continue receiving it through your existing prescription drug benefit.
3. You do not have one of these conditions.
The Bridge Program is not intended for patients who have:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Moderate-to-severe sleep apnea
- Fatty liver disease
Patients with these conditions may already qualify for GLP-1 coverage through their Medicare drug plan.
4. You meet the weight-related eligibility requirements.
You must be at least 18 years old and meet one of the following:
- A BMI of 35 or higher
- A BMI of 30 or higher plus certain qualifying conditions such as:
- Difficult-to-control high blood pressure
- Certain types of heart failure
- Chronic kidney disease (Stage 3a or higher)
- A BMI of 27 or higher plus:
- Prediabetes
- Previous heart attack
- Previous stroke
- Blocked arteries in your arms or legs
If you aren’t sure what your BMI is, your healthcare provider can calculate it for you.
How Do I Enroll?
The process is fairly straightforward.
Step 1: Talk with Your Healthcare Provider
Discuss whether a GLP-1 medication is appropriate for your health goals and whether you appear to qualify for the program.
Step 2: Your Doctor Sends a Prescription
If an eligible medication is appropriate, your provider will send the prescription to your pharmacy.
Step 3: The Pharmacy Verifies Your Medicare Information
Your pharmacy may contact you for your Medicare ID number to verify eligibility.
If you don’t have your Medicare card available, your pharmacist may be able to locate your Medicare information using other identifying information.
Step 4: Medicare Approval
Once eligibility is confirmed, your healthcare provider submits the required paperwork for Medicare approval.
You’ll also receive a letter from Medicare confirming your approval.
Step 5: Pick Up Your Medication
Once approved, you’ll pay $50 for a one-month supply.
As long as you remain on the same medication, you generally won’t need another Medicare approval for future refills—even if your dose changes.
Does the $50 Count Toward My Medicare Deductible?
No.
The $50 monthly payment:
- Does not count toward your Medicare Part D deductible.
- Does not count toward your annual out-of-pocket maximum.
- Is not eligible for the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan.
Good to Know Before You Start
- Zepbound KwikPen users will need pen needles. The KwikPen does not include pen needles, so you’ll need to purchase them separately. Your pharmacist can recommend the correct needle size and show you how to use the pen if needed.
- Continue taking your medication exactly as prescribed and follow up regularly with your healthcare provider.
- If your insurance coverage or Medicare plan changes, let your pharmacy know so we can help ensure your prescriptions continue without interruption.
- Keep your Medicare card available. Your pharmacy may need your Medicare ID number when processing your prescription.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can my pharmacy determine if I qualify?
Your pharmacy can help explain the program, verify your Medicare information, and assist throughout the process. However, final eligibility is determined by Medicare based on the program requirements and the documentation submitted by your healthcare provider.
Do I need a new approval every month?
No. As long as you remain on the same medication, Medicare generally does not require another approval for refills, even if your dosage changes.
Can I transfer my prescription to another pharmacy?
Yes. If you already have a prescription for one of the eligible GLP-1 medications, you can generally have it transferred to another participating pharmacy. The new pharmacy will still need to verify your eligibility through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program before the prescription can be processed.
How long will the program last?
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program began on July 1, 2026, and is currently scheduled to end on December 31, 2027.
Congress or the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) may choose to extend, modify, or replace the program before that date, but no extension has been announced at this time.
